Mixtape Monday #8

Today's Mixtape Monday is all about Meg Myers. I feel like I written this before, but maybe I deleted it? Anyway, a local DJ got totally obsessed with her, stalked on Twitter, tons of creep factor there. She almost didn't come to a performance here in town because of him. I haven't enjoyed an alternative singer this much in a long time. It brings me back to my angsty teenage years, but in a good way.

Comic Bento- March

I really like subscription boxes, but I'm usually too poor to buy them. The mystery of what's coming is so fun, and if you get something you don't particularly like, you can use it as a present or for blog giveaways, so you're not out the money you paid for the box.

Today I'm reviewing the March Comic Bento box, which I received for free to review on the blog and because I signed up for their affiliates program. March's theme was Cloak and Dagger, so very espionage and I loved it! (If I could choose any job in the world, it would be spy. No joke.)

The box the comics come in is very sturdy, and the books are not only bubble wrapped, but there's a cardboard piece in the bottom of the bubble wrap, so your books will not come bent up, which is nice.

Now, these aren't my typical comic picks (I mean, I read the Lumberjanes and the Rat Queens, stuff like that), but I found them to be pretty awesome anyway. And The Coldest City is hardback, which I was not expecting at all! Very good quality and at $20 a month, I think the box is a pretty good deal. So much so, that once I found out that April's theme was Mixed Tape (and you know I'm a sucker for anything nostalgic like a mixed tape), I went and ordered one right away! I can't wait to share that one with you guys once I receive it.

Boxes get shipped out at the end of each month. If you try it out, let me know what you think.

YALLWEST

YALLWEST was a YA book festival held in Santa Monica on April 11 and 12th. I was pretty excited to go, even though I had to drive through L.A. traffic on my own (I get serious anxiety attacks going through there, no joke). It was a last minute decision to go; my husband was out of the state for an airsoft game, and I was feeling a little resentful that he got to go somewhere cool and I didn't, so when I found out about YALLWEST, I just had to go. I only went on Saturday and I had really high expectations for the day, but I was let down. I don't know if its because my children were misbehaving (and they really were, which is rare. I hadn't wanted to take them, but I didn't have any child care.), or because I did have a panic attack as soon as I hit L.A., but the day wasn't as fun as I had hoped. Top that off with the fact that I had to miss most of the day because we had to wait around to get my daughter's TB test read (for her kindergarten physical, not because she has it), and by the time my kids and I got to Santa Monica, the book festival was mostly over. I didn't get to have any of my books signed, and the booths were out of their ARCs, which is what I really wanted.

It wasn't a total bust though. I bought tickets to two panels, and they were both in the afternoon after we'd gotten there. The first one was a tea with Marie Lu and Veronica Roth, and they were so funny!
Melissa De la Cruz introduced them.

They talked about their upcoming projects (a space opera for Veronica, Marie Lu....I can't remember lol) and just about stuff in general. Veronica Roth is a huge Star Wars fan, so that was pretty cool to find out. They took questions from the audience and they were very open and honest in answering, although one person did ask Veronica about how she felt about how the movie industry was basically murdering her books and she hemmed and hawed at if for a few minutes before she finally gave up and said, next question! I get why she couldn't answer that, you can't really bite the hand that feeds, you know. And I didn't see Insurgent because I heard that they put so much of Allegiant in it that its going o be a miracle for them to even make Allegiant a two movie thing. But they put so much of Insurgent into Divergent that it doesn't surprise me at all that they book jumped. Anyway, I'm getting off topic. That panel was so much fun it was worth the trip to Santa Monica just for that.
Veronica Roth and Marie Lu.

The other panel I got to see was the last one of the night called The Smackdown, and it was mash-up of most of the authors that had been there that day. They were showing old photos of them, and a lot of them read stuff they'd written when they were young. It was hilarious! It goes to show you that writers aren't really born that way. They also had some games thrown in, where they'd give first lines of YA books to see if the authors knew them and they even played their own version of Hollywood Squares.

Other events during the Smackdown included an announcement that an award called the Purple Ink Award was being set up in Kami Garcia's honor. The Purple Ink Award is to help classrooms build libraries so that children have the opportunities to "choose their fandoms" as Margaret Stohl said. The purple ink part comes from the fact that while Kami was teaching, she learned that students didn't respond to criticisms well when they were written in red ink, because it reminded them of blood. So she corrected her papers in purple ink, and found that her students did much better. They also announced who would be the keynotes at their sister book festival YALLFest. R.L. Stine was the only one that mattered to me. I remember being so creeped out by his Goosebumps books when I was a kid.

A YA cover band called Tiger Beat closed out the night, but we didn't stay to listen to them. I felt bad for leaving, because so many people did, but it had been a long day, and I still had to drive the two hours back home.

I really hope they do YALLFEST again next year, because I would like do it again. This time I would like to either go alone though, or with someone else who loves YA as much as I do. Have you ever been to a book festival?

#JadoreDessange from Influenster

Out of all the product testing sites I've tried, Influenster never ceases to amaze me. This time, I'm taking part in their #JadoreDessange VoxBox, which was just three products. I received the Oleo Miracle Replenishing Shampoo, Conditioner and Oil by Dessange. Other testers received items from the brand's California Blonde Illuminating Collection.

I took the picture of my products after I used them because I was so excited to use them that I totally forgot that I needed to be a good blogger and take photos first :) The thing I noticed right away was the packaging, of course. The orange had a bit of a summer feel, and the gold accents felt very expensive. It reminded me of the bottles of product at salons, where everything comes from France and Italy and costs a lot.

Since I'm not a huge makeup wearer (lip gloss and nail polish being my only makeup-esque things), I tend to gravitate towards shampoos and conditioners as my beauty splurges. I love to try the next new thing, but I'm also very picky about them because I have allergies and some fragrances are just too much for me. Sadly, this was the case for the Dessange Oleo Miracle Replenishing collection. I did a sniff test before using it, and in the bottle, the scent was fine. It smelled a bit floral, but it wasn't anything that I didn't think I could handle. Even pouring it out into my hand to use it wasn't overly powerful. But once I started lathering on my hair, wow! It was strong. So, so strong. I started sneezing almost immediately, and a headache soon followed. I actually had to rewash my hair later because I just couldn't deal with the smell. Now, before you run off thinking that this product is horrible, it really isn't. It left my hair feeling really soft and I am so sad that I can't use it again. If I didn't have allergies, I would be all over this stuff! Since I dye my hair a lot, it gets damaged, and I am always looking for ways to make it look a little healthier and shinier in between dye jobs.

If you aren't scent sensitive like I am, and have overly processed hair, or just a little hair damage you're looking to correct, I would totally recommend this product to you. And, its available at my favorite store- Target!! Find out what other reviewers are saying, plus other fun stuff by following Influenster and Dessange on Twitter (@Influenster and @Dessange respectively) or searching #JadoreDessange.
**I have received these products complimentary from Influenster for testing purposes. While I received these for free, the opinions stated are my own.**

WonderCon 2015

I don't even know where to start with WonderCon. I originally was supposed to go on Saturday, but something came up with my husband's airsoft team and they ended up going to an out of town game that day, so we switched our badges to Sunday. I wasn't particularly thrilled about going on Easter, I knew my kids would be bummed about missing the Easter bunny, but we thought that Sunday might be easier to travel on and were hoping that the convention would be less crowded that day.

Traveling there was easier, we made pretty good time, so that was nice. As far as the convention not being crowded....nope. It was pretty full. The first year we went to WonderCon, we did it on a whim and went on a Sunday, but that was before they started doing on Easter weekend. It wasn't really crowded and the vendors were trying to get rid of their stuff, so everything was deeply discounted. It wasn't like that at all this time. I'd been telling my husband for months that they'd been marketing WonderCon as the new SDCC, but he didn't believe me. He did once we got there though. There was not a lot of room for movement on the floor, and since we brought the kids with us, they got cranky fast, so the leisurely looking at booths was pretty nonexistent this time. We also didn't get to check out any panels for that reason. Security was different this year too, but I heard that was because of some things that had happened on Saturday. When we got there, we had to pass through a security checkpoint and show them our papers/badges before we could even get near the convention doors. I actually didn't mind, I think they should be doing that more often. I guess so many people had tried to push through to see the cosplayers, plus all those guys with the yellow signs (you know who I'm talking about) caused such a commotion....but that's been a long time coming, so good for WonderCon for finally protecting its patrons from that harassment (and yes, I do think the people with the yellow signs are bullies. not for their religious beliefs, but for how they present them to others). Will something similar be done at SDCC this year? I guess we'll find out in July.

On to our adventures though. One of the things my family and I did get to do though, was go to a screening for Cosplay Dreams 3D, which was neat. I received an email a few days before the event asking if I wanted a complimentary ticket, and they were nice enough to let me bring me my husband and kids along as well. The movie covered all aspects of cosplay, from people who just do cons, to the career cosplayers (think Yaya Han), to LARPers...I mean everyone. I was excited to see some people that I follow on Instagram in the movie (Traci Hines of Adorkable Apparel and Leo Zombie). There were a few technical glitches, but overall it was great. If you get a chance to catch the movie while its making its way around the convention circuit this year, I highly recommend it.

Chris Hardwick was there on Sunday, and we were going to try and catch his panel, but it ran the same time as the movie. He was doing a signing at the Nerdist booth later in the day though, but by the time we learned about it, the line had been capped. So we did what everyone else tried to do, and take pictures while walking by. He had a ton of security around him, but I think they were more for his girlfriend's protection than his own. Loot Crate had the booth right across from Nerdist, and they were so very kind in letting all of us hang out in their booth and try to sneak pictures of Chris Hardwick. I did the super shameful parent thing and used my son as a prop. I took a million pictures of him before the crowd parted just right for me to get a clear shot of Chris in the background.
This picture actually has my son's full face in it, but I'm still a little iffy about showing my kids on here.

We did make it to the Nerdist booth eventually though; got to meet Jessica Chobot and had her sign things and took a picture with her. Then we went to the Geek and Sundry booth that was right next to it and spun the wheel. We all ended up with a deck of Magic cards, except my husband who won like, the whole core set for this year. My husband is always the lucky the one when it comes to games where you have to spin wheels or throw rings or balls at things lol.

I didn't get to take a whole bunch of photos since I was constantly trying to keep my kids from being whisked away in the sea of people, so that sucked. But the day was fun. I got to buy all the issues of the Lumberjanes that I've been missing (except number seven, darn it) and got the WonderCon shirt for the year that has Batgirl on it. My husband bought Superfight, my son bought some super scary looking Five Nights at Freddy's posters and my daughter bought another Pikachu (we can start a farm with all the Pikas we have).

Can't wait to see this game. If its like Superfight, it should get pretty interesting.

I got to meet the creator of those awesome Con*Quest journals and she was just the sweetest! I didn't get to talk to her too long because there was this guy there that was talking about all the stuff she could be doing with her journals. I don't know if it was a legit business meeting or if he was just being a critic, but I felt bad for interrupting either way. I'm hoping that maybe she'll do another giveaway with me, if you guys would be interested in that.

There was also a preview of the movie San Andreas, which if you live in California you know is the big fault line that runs through most of the state (my city is very close to it, or on it, I don't quite remember) and is the cause of most of our earthquakes. Well, yeah, its a movie about an earthquake, and it doesn't just do damage to our state, its felt across the US. It scared my son a little, apparently they haven't covered earthquakes in science yet at his school- oops. And I learned that part of the movie was filmed here in my city, so that's cool.

After we were done with the convention, we ate at the food trucks that were outside the convention center.  My kids got their massive corn dogs and tater tots from The Viking Truck, and they were not your regular corn dogs! I think they were brats or something, my kids didn't like them, so they just ate the tater tots. My husband ate at  Burger Monster. They had a burger called the Rexxar (which is a WoW character) and I thought that was cool. I ate at Spudrunners, and it was delicious! I had a pulled pork grilled cheese and fries and it made me tummy so happy.

Aside from the crowds, I had a nice time at WonderCon. As usual, the cosplayers didn't disappoint (I think looking at their costumes is becoming one of my favorite things about conventions) and the people at the booths I did get to look at were super friendly. Maybe next year I'll get to check out some of the panels (I don't think I've ever gone to a panel at WonderCon. Maybe I should make a convention bucket list and make that number one).

Did you attend WonderCon this year? What did you think about it?

100 Days of Being Geek Chic- Day 7

Choose you favorite quote. Why did you choose it and how does it inspire you?

My all time, hands down favorite quote is this: "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." It's from Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and while Matthew Broderick's character was mostly using that as validation for skipping school with his best friend and his girlfriend, its actually pretty true. We live in such a fast paced world (much more now than in the 80's when that movie was made), and everyone wants everything now now now. And then we get it and its like, that's it? Then we're moving on to the next thing, and there's no appreciation for anything. And everyone is always on their phones trying to get the best photo for Instagram or constantly tweeting and updating their FB status.....it seems like nobody is enjoying what's next to them anymore, they just like what's on the screen. So I like what Ferris said, and I try to put the phone down while I'm out doing stuff, so I can actually enjoy what I'm doing. I try to write a few blog posts at a time so I'm not always at the computer.

And this quote is a bonus, but its my dad quoting John Lennon, "Life is what happens when you're making other plans." I say that because I'm pretty sure John's lyrics are a little different. Anyway, the message is the same, life is going to do what it wants, no matter how much you plan for it. You might get your way sometimes, and other time you might not. You just have to deal with it. I can tell you that for several years now, things have not gone my way at all. I'm hoping that will change soon, because I really don't know how much more I can take. But I have to think that at the end of the day, all this bad luck is preparing me for something good. And maybe life is happening to me because I'm not doing what I'm supposed to be doing.

100 Days of Being Geek Chic- Day 6

Today's question is one of the questions I always dread being asked in job interviews: how would you describe yourself? Some people have no problem talking about themselves, so naturally they have no problem coming up with a list of adjectives a mile long describing how great they are. I am not one of those people. I can never think of anything to say. Someone once told me to use words that others had used to described me if I got stuck. I don't think apathetic, sarcastic and bitchy are selling points though, do you?

So I'm stuck. I don't know what to say. I'll post this for now, just so I keep up, but I'll come back later to edit it. Because I really don't know what to say.

Mixtape Monday #6

It's Monday! Boooooooo lol. Today's Mixtape is dedicated to YALLWEST, a book festival that's going on this weekend in Santa Monica. Its the first year for YALLWEST, but it has a big sister on the East Coast called YALLFEST. I'm super excited to be going, even though I have to drive and driving through LA gives me serious panic attacks. I was going to just make this playlist from songs from YA books turned movies, but that left me a little short, so I cheated and added some songs from movies based off of comics too. I hope you enjoy it!

The songs are from Big Hero 6, some of the Twilight and Hunger Games movies, The Punisher, Elektra, Spider-Man (the ones with Tobey, not Andrew) and Fifty Shades of Grey (Even though I did not see that movie!!). The videos are for the songs that Spotify wants to be turdy about and not add to my playlist, so the order is a little off.

I Caught Myself- Paramore

Bug Bytes- Alien Ant Farm

Meet Me on the Equinox- Death Cab for Cutie

Finding Myself- Smile Empty Soul

Crazy in Love- Beyonce'

Decode- Paramore

Lost in a Portrait- Trapt

Bother- Stone Sour
Although Corey Taylor just got credit on the soundtrack

100 Days of Being Geek Chic- Day 5

What do you hope to learn from this project?

This question kind of goes in with yesterday's question, but I hope to learn some thing about myself that will help me control my social anxiety. I hope to learn that I can finish something I set out to do, even if I stumble a few times along the way. I hope to learn more about the girls who are doing this project with me, to see how other geeks do what they do and learn from them.

100 Days of Being Geek Chic- Day 4

What goals do you have participating in 100 Days?

I guess we knew this question was coming. You can't have a project like this without some goals. I mean, that's the whole reason I signed up. I wanted to accomplish some of the goals I started for myself at the beginning of the year and have been majorly been slacking on. So I guess my goals for this project would be these:

1. Get healthy. I bought myself some pretty athletic shoes and some workout DVDs and I really want to get to it. Its my goal now to get in good enough shape to not want to pass out while walking around SDCC this year, but ultimately I'd like to lose at least 20 of these disgusting pounds that these medications have made me gain by the end of the year. I really hate setting number specific goals though, because I get so bummed out if I don't meet them.

2. Control my social anxiety. Its been getting really out of control lately. Like getting in front of people makes me shake and blush and stutter and its so embarrassing. I can't say that I just need to get out and do more public speaking because I do enough of it and it doesn't help. My husband gets frustrated with me because I complain about not having any friends, but on the rare occasions that we go places together, he'll go off talking to people and I get left alone. I just can't go to people and start talking, I feel really stupid and uncomfortable. So I'm hoping that these activities will help me open up and explore different aspects of myself, and maybe I'll find something in myself that can help me stop being such a wreck.

3. To finish this. I have a problem finishing things. This blog is a fine record of that. So if I can keep up with this for the full one hundred days, I will be really proud of myself. And maybe that will give me the push to finish some other goals too.

100 Days of Being Geek Chic- Day 3

Today's topic is a tough one for me- if there is a book or movie that inspires your life, what would it be and why?

Well, I don't have just one. I have a lot of books and a lot of movies that mean a lot to me for a lot of different reasons, and I wouldn't say that any of them directly inspires my life. But, I will say that The Diary of Anne Frank has been one of my favorites since I was young, and her story is very inspiring.

Anne remained so optimistic, even while in hiding. The most horrible things were happening to her, her family, their friends....and she still held out hope that they would survive, and be able to return to their normal lives someday. Unfortunately for Anne, only her father would be able to return home after the war. The rest of the people they were in hiding with (Anne included), passed away while in Nazi controlled concentration camps. Anne's diary is a beautiful legacy, and sometimes when people are really crappy, and I want to stew in serious dislike for them, I'm reminded of what Anne wrote. "I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart." If she could believe that while enduring the Holocaust, I think we should be able to now.

Five Fandom Friday- Fangirl Moments!

It's that time again- Fandom Friday! Today's is about fangirling (or fanguying, there's no discrimination here) moments. I had to really think about these, because I like to think of myself as a reserved, keep it to yourself person. But the more I thought about it, I realized that I do have a few moments, so here we go.....

1. Seeing New Kids on the Block in concert. I make so secret about how much I love New Kids on the Block. I never got to see them when I was a child, and the first time they went on tour when I was an adult, I didn't get to see them either, and I was devastated. So when they went on tour with the Backstreet Boys in 2011, I jumped at the chance to see them. It was amazing, I think I stood through the whole concert and sang along with every song (even though my singing can make nails on a chalkboard sound good). I got to see them in concert again in 2013, and it was still just as magical. I'm still holding out hope to see them again this year.
NKOTB 2013 at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
My seats weren't great, but I loved every minute of the concert!

2. Molly McIsaac responded to one of my tweets. So I was new to Twitter, and really loving Fangasm. I just randomly tweeted one day that Fangasm reminded me of a nerdy Real World. And she agreed! Molly was one of my favorites on the show because she wasn't afraid to stand up for her beliefs, and just had that free spiritedness about her that I just really liked. I also secretly hoped that her and Mike would hook up. Their fighting had a weird sexual tension vibe about it, and what's a "reality" show without some hookups? (Even though it was Sal's crush on Dani that ultimately stole the show in that department).

3. The Wienermobile came to my town. I've always wanted a Weeny whistle- don't laugh! So when the Wienermobile made a stop in my city, my husband and I took our kids to see the giant hot dog. We had to embarrass ourselves by singing the Oscar Meyer wiener song to get the whistle, but damnit, I did it :) I was even in our local paper because of my love of the that giant hot dog lol.

4. Meeting Ivan from Season One of King of the Nerds at WonderCon. This was a moment where I think I really, truly fangirled, and I had no idea what was going on. It was just after the season had ended and I saw him walking around WonderCon with his girlfriend (wife? I don't know), and nobody was around him. At first I didn't even know if it was him, because I thought for sure that lots of people would be wanting to meet him. But I kept staring and my husband was just like, just go over there already..... So I did. And he was the nicest person! His girlfriend (wife?) took the picture, and they were just so cool about the whole thing. They let me ramble on about how he was my favorite on the show and I really thought he should have won. I went back to my husband so excited that I had gotten the picture, and super embarrassed that I had just rambled on like that to a stranger. They probably thought I was crazy! And later on in the day, I ran into him again, but by then he was swarming with fans and camera crews trying to talk to him.

5. Seeing Wil Wheaton and Felicia Day at NerdHQ. So these are like my nerd idols. The ultimate nerd couple, even though they aren't actually together. I admire and respect their work so much, so going to see them in that panel was a big deal. Sadly, they didn't come out for pictures after like we were told they would, but even being in the same room with them was good enough.

So these are my five, pretty good I think :) What are your fangirl/fanguy moments? Let me know in the comments! And thanks to Megan and Kristin for coming up with these topics.

100 Days of Being Geek Chic- Day 2

Today's post is a fun one: if my personality was an outfit, what would it look like? Some might argue that everything you already wear is an extension of your personality, and I tend to agree with that for the most part. But there is that tiny part of me that disagrees too. When I was growing up, there were a lot of things I wanted to wear, but my parents didn't allow me to because they thought they were trashy lol. And even today, there are a lot of things I'd like to wear but don't. Sometimes its because I don't think its appropriate to wear because I'm a mom, other times its because I don't think I can wear it because of my weight, and sometimes I don't know if I should wear it because of my age (like anything with cartoon characters. Am I too old?).

If I Was An Outfit...

This is actually pretty close to what I wear on an every day basis. I am very much a jeans and tee shirt girl and dressing up for anything sends me into a panic attack. Its an easy outfit to wear when you have children, and I guess it suits my personality in that this outfit makes it easy for me to blend in. I'm very, very shy so I don't like calling too much attention to myself. I'm also very clumsy, so wearing anything nicer than tee shirts and jeans is an automatic ruining of said item of clothing.

I'm either wearing basic Converse or really silly and loud shoes. All of my Vans are some sort of crazy pattern, and I've recently gotten into wearing bright running shoes that match nothing that I own. I also like to wear accessories with my outfits because they're still showing off who I am and what I like, just a little more discreetly. The other day I was at a PTA meeting and said something just randomly, and one of the school administrators commented that she didn't know I was so funny and that it really surprised her. I like to think of my accessories that way. They're little surprises in an otherwise bland outfit.

In the picture above, I own the H&M shirt, the Paul Frank glasses (can't see without them!), the black on black Converse, and the Ariel hair bow. Its my hope to own the constellation earrings and California necklace soon.

What about you? If your personality was an outfit, what would it look like? Share in the comments below or come join us in the Google community!

100 Days of Being Geek Chic- Day 1

I am excited to take part in this awesome concept created by Ariel of The Nerdy Birdie! I occasionally document my struggles with self improvement here, so I thought that joining this group would give me the extra push I need to make my goals happen. Visit here for all the info, join the Google community, and I hope you'll be joining me for this great project!

This is where I post a picture of myself...but I recently got a new computer, and I don't have any pictures of me on it. I'll put one up when I have the chance!

Name: Well...you know me as *aka*Krystelle. We'll go with that for now.
Age: 31
Blog: You're reading it :)
What interested me in joining the project? Like I mentioned above, I sometimes have trouble meeting goals on my own. I just need the extra push sometimes. And, if I meet some cool geek girls in the process, that'd be pretty cool too.
What do I geek out about? New Kids on the Block, World of Warcraft and Hearthstone, books (I'm going to my first book convention in two weeks, so excited!), notebooks (its an addiction, really...), The Walking Dead, King of the Nerds, teen movies, Netflix (I just love it, okay?).....the list is long....

Remember that Google community I posted about? Well this, and every post pertaining to this project, will be posted in that community as well. And some of my answers will be a little different. If you like to compare and contrast like I do, come join the group and compare away!
